Your Norwalk Dentist Explains When You Should Take Your Child to The Dentist

Filed under: Uncategorized — tntadmin @ 4:16 pm

Your Norwalk dentist discusses first dental appointments for your child. As a parent, you always try to do what’s best for you child. From healthy foods to plenty of rest, you’re looking out for their needs. Ensuring that they have good relationships with their health care providers is also important. Finding a dental provider who can help set them up for success is also a must. Most people who are fearful of the dentist report that they had a bad experience as a child. At Sommers Family Dentistry we understand how important your child’s first visits are, and so your Norwalk dentist explains when you should take your child to the dentist, and how you can help them maintain good oral health.

The First Visit

Dr. Adam Sommers and Dr. Norman Sommers recommend that children have their first dental appointment at our office around the age of three years old, unless parents have specific concerns early on. During these first visits we take time to get to know your child and help them feel comfortable in the chair, and with the instruments we use. Our goal is for your child to feel at ease and even excited about their dental appointments.

Choose Advanced Services

We offer additional services for children including fluoride treatments, which help to build and strengthen small teeth. Fluoride is a natural mineral that is typically found in our drinking water, and in certain toothpaste and mouth rinses. Not only does it help to build strong tooth enamel, it can also help remineralize enamel that has been weakened by acids and bacteria.

Dental sealants are a thin coating that goes over the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth to help protect them from tooth decay. Sealants are easy and safe to apply, and they can prevent your child from getting cavities.

If your child participates in sports, you’ll want to discuss protective mouth gear with Dr. Sommers. A custom fit mouth guard is the best way to keep your child’s teeth and mouth safe from injury during sports.

Assist Your Child With Brushing

Your child will need help brushing their teeth until around the age of seven or eight years old. Be sure to help or remind them to brush for at least two minutes. Our hygiene team will be happy to show you and your child proper brushing techniques to ensure that you’re removing plaque build up.
