Your teeth may need a deep clean sometimes, too!

dentist norwalkIf it’s been years since you visited the dentist, or if you can’t even remember the last time you sat in the dental chair, you know it’s time to schedule your appointment with the dentist in Norwalk. Maybe you feel like your teeth have lost all hope, or that we won’t be able to do anything to restore their health and beauty… but that’s not true! With a deep cleaning, we can remove bacteria and infection and get your smile back to its healthy, confident self.

Deep cleaning goes beyond the surface

When you visit Sommers Family Dentistry, we’ll always welcome you with open arms — no matter how long it’s been since we saw you last. When you’ve let the years pass without any dental treatment, we’ll check your gums for pocketing, or areas where bacteria has formed, indicating gum disease. If you’ve got a significant amount, we’ll recommend a deep cleaning.

What a deep clean involves

Also known as scaling and root planing, a deep clean reaches above and below the gum line. First, plaque and tartar will be removed from the surface of the tooth, and then from the pocket area between the tooth and gums. Once we’ve cleaned plaque and tartar from the visible portion of the tooth and right below it, we’ll reach waaaay down to the tooth’s root, removing all the plaque and tartar buildup there.

Once your deep clean is complete, it’s more important than ever that you maintain excellent dental hygiene habits.

Caring for your newly clean teeth

We all know it’s best to stop dental problems from happening in the first place. Now that your teeth are nice and clean, take the following steps to ensure they stay that way for years to come.

Brush twice daily

Many adults believe twice-daily brushing isn’t all that necessary, but they could not be more wrong. It’s absolutely crucial to the health of your teeth that you brush for two minutes, twice a day, every single day. Keep in mind that tartar can form in as little as one day, and once it’s on your teeth, only a dental professional can remove it.

Don’t forget the floss

Good oral hygiene also includes daily flossing. This step is the only way you have of removing the leftover particles that your toothbrush just can’t reach — so don’t leave it out.

Visit your dentist twice annually

When you make sure to visit Sommers Family Dentistry as recommended, we’re able to maintain your oral health with regular cleanings and checkups — no scaling and root planing required. If it’s been more than six months since your last visit to our Norwalk office, call us to schedule your teeth cleaning today! We know your happy, healthy smile will be so glad you did.
